Downtown Newark Parking Study

For current information regarding parking locations, regulations and enforcement, please visit the Public Safety Department's Parking Enforcement page.

Parking in downtown Newark has been an ongoing concern for businesses, residents, and visitors alike. While a wide variety of suggestions are often discussed, an analysis of existing conditions and development of a comprehensive parking strategy is long overdue. The last downtown parking study occurred 1999!

The City of Newark was recently awarded a Smart Growth America Technical Assistance Grant to evaluate and develop solutions for parking issues in Downtown Newark. This grant funded an intensive two-day session focused on identifying and addressing parking concerns specific to downtown Newark. The result of this process was the outlining of several steps that will lead to a long-term parking strategy. The recommended steps with a tentative timeline are listed below and explained in full detail here:

  • Parking Summary Report (Summer 2012)

  • Enforcement Discussion with Stakeholders (Summer 2012)

  • Enforcement Implementation (Fall 2012)     We Are Here
City staff are currently evaluating implementation strategies for parking in downtown Newark

  • Parking Utilization Study (Winter 2012/2013)

  • Long-Term Parking Strategy (Spring 2013)

  • Downtown Framework Plan (Summer 2013)

  • Parking District (2013/2014)
