Parking in downtown Newark has been an ongoing concern for businesses, residents, and visitors alike. While a wide variety of suggestions are often discussed, an analysis of existing conditions and development of a comprehensive parking strategy is long overdue. The last downtown parking study occurred 1999!
The City of Newark was recently awarded a Smart Growth America Technical Assistance Grant to evaluate and develop solutions for parking issues in Downtown Newark. This grant funded an intensive two-day session focused on identifying and addressing parking concerns specific to downtown Newark. The result of this process was the outlining of several steps that will lead to a long-term parking strategy. The recommended steps with a tentative timeline are listed below and explained in full detail here:
